Most people new to RVing at this stage find that the RV selection process can be a bit overwhelming. Well, have no fear. Camping locally means you’ll be less inclined to explore areas outside the campground. Finally, while a smaller RV makes more sense for a cross-country trip, the extra room in a larger RV with a spacious floor plan can make for a more enjoyable experience for your family at your local campground.

Vacation Camper:

Maybe you want an RV to hit the open road for a road trip or take an annual vacation once or twice a year. When you start researching RVs, it’s easy to fall in love with the large and spacious floor plans, bunk rooms, outdoor entertainment centers, and more. However, if you plan to primarily use it for a few extended trips, consider your needs to pack it with you. . Also, if traveling to this exciting destination is part of the lure of RV camping, consider that you’ll be visiting sites and locations around the campground and spending less time there. A small, nimble RV may be right for you.

Why Choose a Small Camper?

While the reasons for choosing a small RV for a family of four can vary, for us, the decision to choose a small camper came down to a few key factors.

Maneuvering – A small RV is easy to maneuver – period. I knew that if I was ever going to travel on my own with kids, it would be less stressful if I wasn’t dragging 30 feet behind me. Also, one of the biggest things we were looking for was the ability to handle forest service roads and overlanding.

Care – Look, I’m just going to be honest. I already have a house to clean and maintain. I don’t need another. This may change if we ever decide to travel full-time, but we want something easy to clean with minimal maintenance and fewer features to break.

Lightweight – We do a lot of traveling and snowboarding in the winter, so the idea of ​​towing a long, heavy RV on icy roads is not appealing, at least to us. Also, a lightweight RV leads me to my next reason for choosing a small RV.

Gas – The bigger the RV, the more gas (and money) it takes to travel with it. We wanted to choose an option that would preserve our mileage as much as possible.

A note about lead times

Before we get into our top picks, I want to mention a little thing called lead time. If you’re not familiar with the term in the RV world, lead time is basically the time between when you start your order and when your order is completed.

Unfortunately, as of October 2021, many RV’s, travel trailers, and campers have a minimum lead time of 6 months. In fact, many take up to 18 months to deliver. As you’re shopping, I think it’s important to know early in the process so you can plan accordingly.

Cons

• It’s not the cheapest camper trailer on our list, though it makes up for most of the features and design for the price. Also, it’s quite heavy at a base weight of 4960 lbs, so if you need to stay under 5,000 lbs total including your gear, this option won’t work for you.

• However, for us, the biggest drawbacks are the lack of an indoor kitchen (although we love the outdoor kitchen) and the heater.
