                 Review of Bar Harbor / Oceanside KOA Holiday Campground

We stayed at the Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA Holiday Campground in Maine for several nights this summer. Read our review to learn more about this campground! See what we think about the amenities, location and overall experience.

Bar Harbor KOA Shoreline

Over the years, we have lived in this amazing country. We had hoped to take a trip to Maine for a long time, and this year, we finally did it. I won’t hold you back: We loved Maine. In fact, we wish we could spend more time there. The 3 nights we spent on Mount Desert Island was the perfect opportunity to see a small part of the fun, beautiful and breathtakingly rugged Maine Coast. We visited the town of Bar Harbor and spent a few days exploring Acadia National Park.

There are a bunch of different campgrounds on Mount Desert Island. These campgrounds range from full-service facilities to rustic national park campgrounds with pristine sites and no hookups for RVs. We knew we wanted a full hookup site (or at least water/power) and we loved that the Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA seemed to sit right on the water. (I love the campsite with the water view!)

Campground Location: Bar Harbor, ME

At 108 square miles, Mount Desert Island is the largest island in the Maine. It is home to Acadia National Park and several towns, including a tourist mecca: Bar Harbor. It’s safe to say: there’s a lot to do on Mount Desert Island! The Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA Holiday Campground is located just after you cross the bridge to the island. In fact, as you drive over the bridge, if you look to the right you can see the RVs parked along the beach at their campsites.

We live in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, PA and that puts us just over 600 miles from the Bar Harbor KOA. We decided to break up the drive over two days, and I’m so thankful we did. Thanks to various pockets of random slow traffic (especially along the I-95 corridor in NY/CT/RI), it took us 12 hours door to door. (We spent one night at the Mystic, CT KOA.)

Campground Accommodation

The Bar Harbor KOA offers an array of different types of accommodations. From full hookup RV sites (water/sewer/electric) to tent sites, RV sites without sewage, Airstream trailer rentals and cabins, you can choose from a variety of lodging options. A quick glance at their campground map shows that they offer a number of waterfront (and near-waterfront) sites. These sites book up extremely fast and up to 11 months in advance. So if you know you want to stay in one of these sites, early booking is essential.

We booked our site for a mid-February to early August stay. I really hoped to be on the water, but by the time we decided to go to Maine all those sites were gone. We spent 3 nights in site 222. We were able to reserve this exact site by calling the campground shortly after booking our stay on the KOA website. If there is a specific location you like, try it. There are no guarantees, but you never know. Our site was very small, but had partial water views.

There were campers lined up in front of us, but we expected that and knew our site wasn’t directly on the water. One afternoon, the camper in front of us pulled out and we spent a few hours enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Our site only had water and electricity hookups. It wasn’t a big deal, although we did need to pay for the Honeywagon to haul out our black and gray tanks during our second day. (We totally forgot to bring our toter tank – which would have been nice to have instead of paying for the campground.

Check-in process

The check-in process was actually incredibly smooth. RV check-in at Bar Harbor KOA is 3pm and check-out is 11am. (Note: Cabins and Airstream rentals have slightly different check-in and check-out times. Call or check their website for more information).

As we left Connecticut for Maine, I received a text from the Bar Harbor KOA offering an automated check-in process. The text told me to check my email if I wanted to complete my check-in online. I was able to follow the link in the email and complete my check-in. (Essentially you’re just paying the balance that’s owed on your stay when you do this, and it saves you a few minutes in the office.)

When we got to the KOA we stopped and told the office we were there. An employee pulled into the campground golf cart and we followed him to our site.

Campground facilities and amenities

At this point, we’ve been to close to a dozen different KOAs over the years. There’s a reason we renew our KOA memberships every year and why we seek out KOAs when we travel: KOAs almost always offer an expected level of amenities and overall campground maintenance. We figured the Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA was no exception.

Beach area and water access

The campground itself sits right on the water (it’s called “Western Bay” on the map I consulted). There were several public access areas on the waterfront where campers could explore the shoreline, launch their kayaks or paddle boards, etc. We enjoyed some sunsets from the public beach area on the west side of the campground. The beach is not sand, it is rocky and has some really neat rocks that drop into the water. (Make sure you check out this area at low tide).

Campground Store

The campground store at Bar Harbor KOA is a typical campground store that offers a selection of basic supplies, grocery items, gifts, and more. You can buy firewood from the store and they will deliver it to your campsite if you prefer.

Lobster Trap Cafe

This small takeout restaurant is located right in the middle of the campground. In the morning, they sell coffee and pastries and other snacks. For lunch and dinner you can find entrees loaded with burgers and lobster. (Prices go up accordingly, we saw lobster grilled cheese sandwiches advertised for $24!) At night you can pop over and get some scooped ice cream.

The dog park

This campground has a K9 park for your dog to run around and have some fun.

Playground, yard games, and bike rentals

Our kids had fun playing in the playground several times during our stay. There is a basketball court near the playground. A lawn area near the K9 park has some yard games such as horseshoes, cornhole and gaga pit. Perfect for a quick game!

Bathroom and laundry.

We did not use any of the bathhouse or laundry facilities on this trip, however the campground has several bathrooms, 2 baths with shower facilities and a laundry room with a coin operated washer and dryer.

Activities

Each day the campground posted a list of activities they were offering. Some were free (like the KOA “train” that takes kids around) and some required a small fee. Some activities are offered free of charge but donations are requested that go to the KOA Care Campus. One afternoon our daughter did some arts and crafts under the pavilion and the other night our son participated in a “Make Your Own Hopi Pie” activity.

Shuttle to Acadia and Bar Harbor

We did not experience these shuttle services, but I wanted to mention that the campground does have them. They are not free and I believe you have to make a reservation.

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

A fun but yes, rather crowded, place on the southern tip of the island. This lighthouse is a famous Bar Harbor symbol. Want the picture below? You have to do a little work for it. Walk through the parking lot and find a trail that leads into the woods. Follow the trail to a steep but sturdy wooden staircase and descend to the rocks below. Walk between the rocks and after a few minutes, the lighthouse will be visible above you, on the cliff side.

Final thoughts

We enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA Holiday Campground. This was not a cheap campground at $121 per night plus $6 per child per night. (Seriously, why do KOAs add a charge for kids? It always makes me so angry.)

The campground put us in a great location to be close to Acadia and Bar Harbor.

We really liked the waterfront views and agreed that we would love to stay here again.
